Have you ever met someone who talks just to hear their voice? Parents will ask their children do you think I talk just because I like the sound of my voice. Some people indeed talk just to be talking. There are those who find silence awkward. I was visiting someone recently and there was a moment when there was nothing said. I just sat there in silence, and after a few seconds, they spoke up to say something just to break the silence. Why is it that people find silence so awkward? In Job 2:13 his friends came and set with him for seven days, that is 168 hours, 10,080 minutes or 604,800 seconds and do you know what they did? Job 2:13 NASB1995 Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

Seven days of silence, most people would feel like they were losing their mind. We have been trained by Satan to make noise because in noise it is difficult to hear God. Another verse speaks of how Satan has twisted one spiritual gift to cause noise so people won't hear God. Paul corrects this in 1 Corinthians 14:2 NASB1995 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

If it is not meant for men but for God, why is it done in the presence of men? No one understands it so it is not useful. Paul actually says in 1 Corinthians 14:28 NASB1995 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.

If the words or the sounds have no meaning to man and do not edify them, then it is more Godly to just keep quiet. If you refuse the silence and talk it just causes confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33 NASB1995 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

So when you feel the urge to talk but you have nothing to say that edifies man into the presence of God or praises God, then just be quiet. You might be surprised by what you hear from God in your silence.
