Exodus 2:15 NASB1995 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
Moses was the son of two Levites. He was brought up with the education of a family member of Pharaoh but with the knowledge of the Hebrew God. Raised by Pharaoh's daughter and nursed by his own mother he knew both societies but was accepted by neither.
He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and came to the Hebrew's aid. He killed the Egyptian and hid his body. With a desire to help the Hebrews he was working in his own strength and knowledge. We come to our text and see that Pharaoh heard of this incident and tried to kill Moses. He immediately realized he was incapable of helping the Hebrews also known as the nation Israel. Realizing his weakness he fled Egypt and gave up on his desire to help His people Israel.
This is where we often find ourselves and often where we find God. It often takes a scared man to realize his own weakness. It often takes a broken and weak man or woman to seek God.
Moses ran to the land of Midian and camped by a well. Still not at the point of fear and brokenness that he needed to be at, God orchestrated a 40-year plan to bring Moses to the point of relying on Him. During these 40 years, Moses was taught by a follower of God. His father-in-law was the priest of Midian. During this time, he was shown how to follow the Lord and how to shepherd a flock, which would be needed for Him to be used by God.
I read the account of Moses and I think of how God has had to do the same thing to me and many others, just to get us to the point of being usable by Him. Moses was shown his own fear and weakness. He was shown God and how to take care of those helpless people who don't know which way to go. He used sheep to teach him that. Then He had to build him up with the confidence in God to be completely obedient. Exodus 4:10-12 NASB1995 Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.”
Moses still was not confident in the Lord, so God was angry, but He gave Moses an assistant (his brother Aaron). Moses finally went and, in time, trusted the Lord.
So when fear comes on you. When brokenness overcomes you. When you wonder why you are in a place you didn't expect to be, just remember Moses and learn!
God has placed you there to mold you into a usable vessel for Him. If you are pliable enough maybe it won't take 40 years as it did Moses. If you are pliable enough maybe it won't take 29 years as it did me. It all depends on how easy you are to mold.
Praying today you will be pliable.
